NIUBI Partition Editor Free is the entry tier of a partition manager built around one idea: an operation that is already underway should be cancelable. The program's headline mechanism is a virtual mode for data-moving operations, plus a rollback that can undo the current step within a short window, and an offline pre-boot execution mode for volumes that cannot be changed while Windows is running. The feature list is the standard partitioning set: resize, move, merge, split, copy, convert, defragment, hide, change label and drive letter, wipe, and surface-test. It also converts between MBR and GPT layouts and can convert a logical partition into a primary one.

How the workflow fits together

Like most tools in this class, changes are queued and applied as a batch. The window shows the disk map with a drag handle at each partition edge, and the pending-operation list records every change in order before Apply is pressed. The distinction that matters here is where the work happens. A resize of a data volume can run inside Windows; the volume that carries the running system is normally handled by rebooting into the program's own pre-boot environment, where nothing is locked. That reboot path is what makes the tool usable on the system volume at all, and it is also why the machine should be on mains power with a working battery or an uninterruptible supply before the batch starts.

Configuration, limits and trade-offs

The Edition Comparison lists the Free tier as intended for home use, and the professional, server and technician editions add commercial licensing, support for Windows Server, WinPE media creation and command-line control. That is the practical boundary. The rollback window protects against a mistake made in the first seconds of an operation, not against a power cut halfway through a multi-hour move, so backups remain mandatory. Dynamic disks, Storage Spaces and the ReFS filesystem sit outside the supported range, and a badly fragmented volume takes longer to shrink because data has to be relocated before the partition boundary can move. Defragmentation before a large resize is worthwhile for that reason.

Who should choose something else

If the machine is a server, the Free Edition's home-use licence is the wrong tier and the server edition is the relevant product. If you only need to extend a volume into adjacent empty space on a single disk, the Disk Management console already in Windows does that without any download. If the real task is to copy a working Windows installation to a new solid-state drive, a dedicated clone or migration tool will produce a better-aligned result, and a backup suite is the correct answer when what you actually want is versioned protection rather than a one-time geometry change.
