What DiskGenius Free covers

DiskGenius Free combines a partition manager with a disk utility toolkit that most vendors split across two or three programs. It creates, deletes, formats, resizes, splits, merges and hides partitions, converts between MBR and GPT layouts, converts between primary and logical partitions, and changes cluster size and volume labels. Beyond partitioning it clones disks and partitions, images volumes to its own file format, wipes with several erase standards, checks and repairs bad sectors, and can search for lost or deleted partitions so that a volume which disappeared from Windows still becomes mountable and browsable.

How the workflow fits together

A portable and an installer build are both published for 64-bit and 32-bit Windows. Every operation is prepared first and executed second: you queue the resize, convert or clone, review the pending operations in the list, and then apply them as one batch. That staging model is the important safety feature, because it shows the intended layout before anything is written. A WinPE-based boot medium can be created for work that cannot be done from a running system, such as resizing the volume that holds Windows itself. Free space can be dragged between adjacent partitions, and the partition recovery scan offers a preview of the file tree so you can judge whether the found partition is the one you want before saving it.

Configuration, limits and trade-offs

The 64-bit installer is the current release and the portable ZIP runs without installation, which is useful on a machine you do not want to modify. Free space can be allocated from the end of a partition only in some layouts, and moving the start of a system partition still needs the boot medium. Some of the advanced recovery and migration features belong to the Professional edition, and the free edition is licensed for personal use rather than for commercial deployment. Because the tool works at the raw volume layer it will happily act on a disk with a failing drive, so cloning a suspect disk should be the first step wherever possible; every extra write to a dying drive costs data.

Who should choose something else

Windows already includes a capable baseline: Disk Management resizes NTFS volumes, and the diskpart command line handles scripting. Someone who needs only occasional free-space adjustment does not need a third-party tool. Enterprise deployments that require central licensing, scripting interfaces and support contracts should look at commercial partition managers, and file-level recovery from a formatted volume is usually better served by a dedicated undelete program that specialises in content-aware recovery rather than partition structure.
