What is freeware?

Is freeware safe?
It depends on the source. Freeware from official project sites is generally safe; freeware from random "download portals" often ships with bundled adware. Rule of thumb: download only from the developer's site or trusted repositories, and skip installers that offer "recommended" extra software.
How is freeware different from open source?
Freeware is about price; open source is about the license of the code. Open source programs are always freeware, but freeware can be closed source. Open source adds a practical benefit: independent builds and audits keep the program honest.
Do freeware programs expire?
No. Genuine freeware has no trial period and no forced upgrade. If a program stops working after 30 days and asks for payment, it was shareware, not freeware. We keep such tools out of the catalog or label them clearly.
