Inside Microsoft Teams
1 / 3Group chat in Microsoft Teams — official Teams Free product preview
Microsoft Teams download and free-plan guidance
Microsoft Teams combines conversations, meetings, and shared content in one communication app. It can be useful for a regular group that needs a place to keep discussions between calls, rather than starting every meeting from scratch. The desktop app is available for supported Windows and Mac systems; Microsoft's supported web experience is an alternative when installing software is not an option.
Choose the right account context
A personal account, a workplace account, and a school's managed account can lead to different Teams experiences. Installing the app does not grant access to an organization's resources. If your work or school supplies Teams, use its sign-in instructions and ask its administrator about access instead of creating an unrelated personal account to solve an organizational permission problem.
What the free option is for
Teams Free provides chats, communities, file sharing, and meeting features without requiring a paid organizational plan. Microsoft separately offers paid plans with different limits and business capabilities. Downloading the client alone does not unlock every feature advertised across the Teams product family, and features such as enterprise administration or particular AI services should not be assumed to come with the free option.
For current meeting and storage allowances, consult Microsoft's Teams Free page. Published limits and plans can change, so it is better to confirm the allowance before planning an event than to rely on an old comparison chart.
Prepare for the first meeting
Check the selected microphone, speaker, and camera before joining a call. Screen sharing can expose notifications, browser tabs, and documents unrelated to the meeting; choose a specific window when that meets the task. Shared files and meeting links also deserve a look at their intended audience.
Use the current client
Microsoft has retired the classic Teams client. Use the current official download route instead of a classic installer linked by an old tutorial. This listing describes the current product and the distinction between free and organizational plans; the gallery uses Microsoft's official Teams Free interface previews. If your group already communicates through WhatsApp, compare the WhatsApp desktop guide before adding another account workflow.
- Best for
- Keeping group conversations, video meetings, and shared files together, using either Teams Free or an organization's licensed account.

Download questions
Is Microsoft Teams free?
There is a free option, alongside paid plans and organization-managed deployments. This page does not treat paid features as included simply because the app can be downloaded.
Why does my account show different features?
Account type, assigned licence, and organizational settings all affect the experience. A colleague's work account may have capabilities your personal account does not.
Can I use Teams without installing the app?
Microsoft offers a web experience on supported browsers. Check the publisher's current web requirements and the meeting's joining instructions; desktop and web features are not necessarily identical.
Should I download classic Teams?
No. Microsoft has ended availability of the classic client. Use the current supported route on the official download page.
