Chat and video calls attached to your own Nextcloud server
Nextcloud Talk Desktop is the official Windows client for Talk, the chat and video conferencing component of the Nextcloud self-hosting platform. It brings conversations out of the browser and into a native window while keeping everything on the Nextcloud server an organisation already runs. Because Talk is part of the same product as files, calendars and contacts, a discussion can reference a document that lives in the same account, and access follows the server's own user directory and sharing rules.
What it does
The client shows your Talk conversations, including one-to-one chats, group conversations and meeting rooms, with file attachments pulled from your Nextcloud storage. Video calls support screen sharing, a raised-hand indicator, reactions and participant lists, and meeting rooms can be protected with a password or restricted to logged-in users. Notifications arrive as native Windows alerts even when the window is minimised, and the app supports multiple Nextcloud accounts if you work with more than one server. Calls can be joined with a link by guests when the administrator allows public rooms.
The workflow
Install the client and add your Nextcloud server address, then authorise the connection through the server's login flow, which normally opens a browser window for single sign-on or two-factor authentication. Once authorised, conversations appear in a sidebar grouped by type. Starting a call is a button inside a conversation; sharing a screen is another button inside the call, and the server administrator controls the available high-performance backend, which determines participant capacity and quality. Settings cover notification behaviour, the option to start the app minimised, and account management for adding or removing servers.
Practical settings and limits
Everything depends on a working Nextcloud server with the Talk app enabled, so this client is not useful standalone and there is no public network to join. Large calls require the High Performance Backend, a separate server-side component, without which participant counts and reliability are limited. Conversation history lives on the server, so nothing is available offline, and each Nextcloud account must be added and authorised separately. Desktop notifications require the app to be running, and a self-hosted deployment means owning upgrades, backups and certificates.
Who should choose something else
Choose a hosted messenger if nobody wants to maintain a Nextcloud instance, or if you need compliance archiving and enterprise administration that the self-hosted stack does not provide out of the box. Organisations that already pay for a collaboration suite will usually get better meeting features there. If you only need occasional group video calls and no server, a dedicated free meeting service is simpler than deploying Nextcloud purely for chat.
- Best for
- Existing Nextcloud users who want native Windows chat and video calls tied to their own server and file storage.
- Good to know
- Requires a Nextcloud server with the Talk app; large calls need the separate High Performance Backend component.
How to get started
- Download the Windows MSI or installer from the official Nextcloud Talk desktop releases page and install it.
- Add your Nextcloud server address, then complete the login flow in the browser window that opens, including any two-factor prompt.
- Pick a conversation from the sidebar or create a new one, and invite colleagues from your server's user directory.
- Press the call button inside a conversation, then use the screen share control while the call is running.
- Adjust notification and startup options in settings, and ask your administrator about the High Performance Backend before planning large meetings.
Questions & answers
Can I use Nextcloud Talk Desktop without a Nextcloud server?
No. The client is a front end for the Talk app on your own server, so a Nextcloud instance with Talk enabled is a prerequisite.
How many people can join a call?
Small calls work on the base server, but larger meetings need the High Performance Backend component, which the administrator installs separately.
Are chat messages stored on my PC?
No. Conversations live on the server, so the client needs a working connection and does not keep an offline message archive.
