Inside Mousetroke
1 / 1Mousetroke English settings and Back gesture configuration — genuine publisher image from the v0.1.1 source tag; application not executed by us.
Turn mouse movements into everyday actions
Mousetroke adds configurable mouse gestures to Windows. Hold the right button, draw a movement and map it to an action such as going back, closing a tab or minimising a window. The publisher describes an ordinary right-click as remaining available when you click without drawing.
Gestures, corners and application rules
Built-in mappings cover browsing, editing, windows and media controls. You can edit or disable them, record a new gesture and use different rules for different applications. Screen corners and edges provide additional triggers, such as showing the desktop or changing volume.
The current release also supports recorded curve shapes. Recognition and performance claims are the publisher's, not results of our own Windows test. We did not execute the downloaded application or measure its memory use.
Keep control of the actions
Supported action types include sending keys, manipulating windows, opening an application or URL, running a command and using Lua. Commands and scripts operate with your user permissions. Import configurations only from sources you trust and inspect what each action does before enabling it.
Per-app exclusions are useful for remote-desktop, drawing and 3D applications that already use mouse drags. The publisher documents automatic pausing for fullscreen applications and a Win+Esc shortcut to pause or resume gestures. Test a small set of non-destructive actions before configuring shortcuts that close windows or terminate processes.
A portable application, not a setup wizard
The official distribution is a complete single EXE for 64-bit Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11. Its settings window uses Microsoft Edge WebView2. Portable does not mean that it writes no settings: configuration lives in the user's AppData folder, and enabling startup integration changes the Windows startup configuration.
The publisher states that the EXE is not code-signed yet, so Windows may display a warning. A matching checksum and an antivirus report do not remove that trust consideration; no guarantee of safety is made here.
Updates and licensing
The newer release adds a daily check for updates on GitHub, enabled by default and switchable off in Preferences. It also provides a manual check and an update download. For that reason we do not repeat the older submission's blanket statement that the application has no network features.
Mousetroke is released under the MIT licence for this exact release. Our download is the complete official portable executable, unmodified, with the copyright and permission notice reproduced below. The gallery is a genuine settings image supplied in the official source repository, not a capture from an application we ran.
- Best for
- Windows users who want custom mouse gestures and application-specific shortcuts without an account.
- Good to know
- Portable EXE for Windows 10 1809+/11 x64; settings need Edge WebView2. Publisher says unsigned. GitHub update checks default on but can be disabled. Imported command/Lua actions require trust.
Start with reversible, familiar gestures
Choose a few actions such as Back or Show desktop, then check them in the applications you use. Keep remote-desktop or design programs excluded if they need their own right-button drags. Avoid importing a large configuration before inspecting its command and script actions.
Back up your configuration
The publisher documents import and export in the settings window, with configuration in %APPDATA%\mousetroke\config.json. Export a copy before experimenting with a new set of rules. To stop using the program, turn off its startup option and exit the tray process before removing the executable; preserve the configuration if you want to keep your mappings.
