Edit PDFs and recognize scanned text
JOPDF brings document editing and page organization into a desktop application. It is useful when a PDF needs more than a reader: correcting existing text, changing an image, adding comments, or assembling pages from several documents. The publisher confirms permanent free use for individuals, without a trial deadline or subscription. Business, institutional, and enterprise use requires a separate commercial licence.
Everyday PDF editing
The editor provides text, image, and link tools, alongside highlights, notes, drawing, and stamps for reviewing a document. Page tools can reorder, rotate, insert, remove, merge, or split pages. Conversion, compression, password protection, form filling, and image export cover other common document tasks. Keep an original copy before making structural changes, and check converted files for layout differences.
Local and online OCR are different
Optical character recognition can add searchable text to a scan or produce an editable PDF. JOPDF offers an on-device mode and a cloud-assisted mode. The publisher has confirmed OCR availability on the current Windows and macOS releases and says both modes are free for individual users. Recognition quality varies with scan quality, language, and layout; we have not independently benchmarked it.
Choose local OCR for documents you do not want processed in the cloud. Online OCR uses remote processing and should not be described as entirely offline or entirely local. Review the publisher's privacy information before using it with sensitive material.
Downloads and licence details
Use the official Download Center for the appropriate desktop edition. Our hosted Windows file is an online installer: it downloads additional application components, and its own version number is not the application release number. The conversion tool also requires an initial plugin download before offline conversion is available.
Linux is not listed here as a confirmed current release because the publisher's latest clarification says it is still being tested. The public EULA still contains purchased-period wording that the publisher says is being reviewed. For organizational or commercial deployment, obtain the applicable written licence rather than relying on the site's general free-download wording.
- Best for
- Personal PDF editing, document annotation, and making scanned pages searchable.
- Good to know
- Free personal use only. The Windows file is an online installer; its version differs from the app. Online OCR uses cloud processing.
Before installing JOPDF
Choose Windows or macOS in the publisher's Download Center. Windows requirements are listed as Windows 7 or later; macOS compatibility depends on the package and processor. Verify the selected package on the official page rather than assuming all builds support the same systems.
Can I use it at work?
The publisher distinguishes free individual use from commercial, institutional, and enterprise use. Ask JOPDF for the applicable commercial licence before rolling it out at work. Read the published EULA and resolve any inconsistent wording with the publisher.
