The shape of a working session
The first step is creating a connection: pick the database type, supply host, port, credentials and optionally an SSH tunnel or SSL settings, and let the driver manager fetch the JDBC driver if it is missing. Once connected, the navigator expands into schemas, tables, views and procedures, and double-clicking any object opens its definition. The SQL editor runs statements against the active connection, keeps a history, and can explain or format a query; results appear in a grid where rows can be filtered, sorted and edited in place when the driver and permissions allow it. Common follow-up tasks - generating DDL, exporting a result set, comparing or transferring data between two connections - are available from the same object menus.
Practical settings and limits
The application is written in Java. The Windows and macOS installers bundle a runtime, while some Linux packages rely on a system Java installation. JDBC drivers are downloaded on demand, so the first connection to a new database type needs internet access; in a restricted network the driver files must be provided manually. Fetch behaviour matters on large tables: drivers that return whole result sets at once consume memory quickly, so set a sensible fetch size and limit rows while exploring. The Community edition covers core database work, but some capabilities are reserved for the paid editions, and a few engine-specific features exist only for the databases those editions emphasise. Very large instances are easier to navigate with filters than by scrolling the whole tree.
When to choose something else
For a single local SQLite file, a lightweight SQLite browser opens faster and does less. For cloud-hosted databases, the provider's own console is often the quickest path for one-off queries. If SQL runs in pipelines rather than at a desk, command-line clients integrate better with scripts and automation.
